Asbestos removal in the Whitsundays
Hazclear Environmental provides licensed asbestos removal across the Whitsunday region including mainland properties and island sites. We hold both Class A (friable) and Class B (bonded) removal licences and deliver removal works for residential, commercial, resort and demolition projects.
The Whitsundays present unique removal challenges. Older resort and tourism buildings from the 1970s and 1980s contain significant volumes of asbestos. Cyclone Debbie in 2017 left a number of these buildings damaged or abandoned, with asbestos materials now exposed to years of tropical weather and in varying states of deterioration. Removal on island sites requires coordination of barge access, equipment transport and regulated waste logistics that mainland projects do not encounter.
Common removal projects in the Whitsundays
Abandoned and cyclone-damaged buildings
Several resort and commercial buildings across the Whitsundays were severely damaged by Cyclone Debbie and have remained unoccupied since. These structures contain asbestos-containing materials that have been deteriorating in tropical conditions for years. Roof sheeting, wall linings, eaves, wet-area panels and floor coverings that were originally bonded may have degraded to the point where they are reclassified as friable, requiring Class A licensed removal under full containment. Hazclear provides the pre-demolition assessment, removal planning, licensed removal and clearance for these sites so demolition or redevelopment can proceed.
Resort renovations and refurbishments
Operating resorts and hospitality venues built before 2004 require asbestos to be identified and removed before renovation, room refurbishments, kitchen upgrades or facility improvements can begin. These projects require careful scheduling around guest occupancy and coordination with resort management to minimise disruption. Hazclear provides clearance certification to confirm the area is safe for reoccupation and guest use after removal is complete.
Residential properties
Homes in Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, Proserpine and Bowen built before 2004 commonly contain bonded asbestos in wall linings, ceilings, eaves, roofing and wet areas. Removal is required before renovation or demolition. A detailed explanation of how removal works is available in our asbestos removal guide.
Island site removal and demolition
Removal on the Whitsunday Islands involves additional logistical planning. Equipment, personnel, containment materials and waste must be transported by barge. Regulated waste must be removed from the island and tracked to a licensed mainland disposal facility. Hazclear coordinates all island logistics as part of the project scope, including barge scheduling, equipment staging, waste transport and disposal tracking.
Soil contamination
Sites where older buildings have been demolished or partially demolished may have asbestos in the surrounding soil from buried debris, scattered fragments or degraded materials that have broken down into the ground. Soil assessment and remediation may be required alongside or following building material removal.
What is included
Every removal project in the Whitsundays includes notification to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, a site-specific Asbestos Removal Control Plan, barricading and signage, the removal work, decontamination, double-wrapped waste, regulated waste transport and disposal at a licensed facility, clearance inspection and full project documentation including clearance certificate, waste tracking certificates and disposal records.
For island projects, the scope also includes logistics coordination for equipment transport, personnel access and regulated waste removal from the island.
If you need testing before removal, this is quoted separately. A general guide to removal pricing is available on our cost guide page. Regional and island projects may carry additional mobilisation and logistics costs.
